As part of our mission to demystify the industry, we write “How to Glow in the Dark,” a weekly newsletter for authors and publishing professionals at all career stages.

Published three to four times a month since 2020, “How to Glow in the Dark” unpacks everything from querying and submitting to common author freakouts, market trends, publisher histories, and current industry gossip. With more than 13,000 subscribers, it’s long been a bestseller in Substack’s Literature category.

We started “How to Glow in the Dark” as a free resource for current Neon clients, and it’s still free if we represent you! (Subscriptions are strictly opt-in—ask your agent if you want one.)

For the general public, we’re about 20% free and 80% paywalled. Free posts include this one on how to write a book proposal, complete with sample template; why the work of a writer is so important, even in the face of the world’s despair; what a good author-agent relationship looks like in practice; and many more.

We hope you’ll find this resource useful and reassuring and welcome all comers to the community. NB, however, that subscribing to “How to Glow in the Dark” has no bearing on your chances of finding representation at Neon Literary. If you’re an existing “Glow” subscriber interested in becoming a Neon client, we ask that you not mention your subscription status in your query.
